I had the cleverest blog post in mind.
In the context of crafting the prototype for Doomed Colony, I was going to walk through the process of using InDesign’s “data merge” function to turn spreadsheets into game cards. I’d even found a great video tutorial series to share that would walk you through it.
But it all seemed a little familiar. I did a quick search and, sure enough, I’d already covered this topic in a blog post two years ago.
That’s okay. Network TV survived on reruns for decades; there’s no reason I can’t roll out a classic flashback now and then. Besides, the video tutorials are new. So without further ado:
- Laying Out Cards With Data Merge: In this classic blog post, I give an intro to turning spreadsheets into cards, and cards into 3×3 sheets for printing and playing at home.
- Card at Work: In this series of video tutorials, game designer and graphics guru Daniel Solis demonstrates how to create game cards in InDesign.
Later this week, I’ll apply these lessons creating the cards for Doomed Colony and let you know how it goes.
