Like a lot of creatives, I’ve got notebooks full of ideas for cool projects I’d like to do someday: books to write, games to design, worlds to build, taxes to file — fun stuff like that.
One of those ideas was for a deck of cards with world-building features on them. This would come in handy for initial world-building, or creating a setting on the fly in an RPG when your players go off-track. For a couple years now, I’ve been trying to figure out how to use a single card to represent either a terrain feature (like a mountain) or a point of interest (like a ruined temple), depending on how it was used, but haven’t had time to nail it down.
When I saw the World Architect Deck on Kickstarter, I knew I had to pick it up. It’s pretty much exactly what I wanted, with the added benefit of already being done so I don’t have to make it. While Simian Circle Games hasn’t cracked the feature/POI nut either, they addressed the issue by making two different types of cards that work well together in the same deck, and that’s close enough.
Hmm… Maybe I should revisit those old notebooks and see if there’s another Kickstarter in there just waiting to happen.
