As I mentioned to a couple friends at GenCon, this was the first time in probably ten years that I’ve had to think about what I was going to wear at the show. For the past decade or so, I’ve been in Fantasy Flight uniform – one-color t-shirts, the first few years, then full-color t-shirts, then fancy, long-sleeved, button-up-the-front, embroidered shirts the past couple years.

But now? Now I’m representing InnerWorkings and myself. So I decided to go with a shirt, tie, and slacks (to show I’m professional), with a pair of sneakers (partially to show that I’m still a fun gamer geek, and partially to avoid the blisters I got from my dress shoes at Expo). The uniform seemed to to do the trick, but it got a little hot outside the air-conditioned convention center.

My big release for the show was the New Gods’ Handbook, for the New Gods of Mankind RPG, published by Dark Skull Studios. I was one of a handful of writers on this book, so I got to spend some time in the booth, singing its praises to all who passed by.

I also spent some time working the booth for Skirmisher Publishing, for whom I serve as editor on their line of PDF products. They were running some awesome-sounding Cthulhu Live events which, like most years, I simply didn’t have time to play in. “Next year,” I promised myself, “I will schedule time one night to play.” I seem to recall making a similar promise last year.

Other highlights of the show for me include checking out Red Juggernaut, Jim Long’s new company, which is doing some great-looking boardgames and developing a sweet new IP (I’m a suck for property-driven games). Speaking of properties, I had a long talk with Sean from Reality Blurs about their dark fantasy RunePunk setting, a shorter talk about their upcoming Iron Dynasty world, and the possibilities for the future.

And then there was hanging out with Jim Pinto, graphic designer, art director, and fellow game designer. Jim’s been around a little longer than me, mostly with AEG, and we’ve known of each other for years, but never really hung out until now. Now that we’re both working independently (or as I prefer to call is, “Gone ronin”), we’re discussing projects where we can combine our talents for maximum synergy. Exciting stuff. I’ll keep you posted.

I’m back from GenCon and almost rested. The con was fun, productive, and exhausting – just like nature intended. I spent way too much money, but had some great conversations and actually played a couple games. Yeah. I know.

I’ll have a post-con report in the next day or two, but don’t have the time or energy just yet. Keep your eyes peeled for more exciting updates in the days to come.

I should have got a lot more work done in the past week, but every spare minute was sucked into the vortex that is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Finally finished it Tuesday night. I didn’t mean to stay up until midnight. But I only had two chapters left. And then just one. And I couldn’t go to sleep like that.

And then I dreamed of Hogwarts. I think I was headmaster.

Did you miss me?

My web host, which I’ve long suspected was run by monkeys, handed me another pile of simian evidence this weekend when my entire operation – website, e-mail, ftp – went down without warning Friday night.

I’m a patient, understanding guy. Hey, these things happen. Servers crash. Migrations go badly. I can dig it.

So I gave them until Sunday before I e-mailed them. Monday, I followed up with a trouble ticket and a phone call. After an hour or so on hold, I talked to a guy who said my account had been suspended because I had large files in my public HTML directory. Their newly-installed “script” assumed that I was hosting illegal mp3s or pr0n or something (and not back-ups for New Gods of Mankind), and shut me down.

No questions.

No warning.

No explanation.

I would have expressed my dissatisfaction to the tech support guy, but from his vaguely accusatory attitude throughout the conversation, I didn’t think it would carry much weight. I just stuck with, “Well, I’d love to delete those offending files, but I don’t have FTP access.”

FTP and e-mail were back immediately. But the website itself was gone until this morning, as well as my access to WordPress.

So yeah, I’m not exactly thrilled with my current host, SmartLogic. If anyone has any suggestions for a better host, I’d love to hear ‘em. Please drop me a comment or an e-mail.

Did you hear? There was a terrible accident a few miles from our house last night: a major bridge collapsed during rush our, dumping dozens of vehicles into the river. Seven confirmed dead last night, 60 injured, and the death toll expected to rise today.

But we’re okay.

My wife and I went out to a movie last night, leaving the girls with a sitter. When we returned, the sitter told us about the bridge collapse… and informed us that friends and relatives from around the state had been calling all night to make sure we weren’t on the bridge when it went.

All we can do is pray for the survivors and the family of those who didn’t make it. That, and appreciate one more reason to be grateful I don’t commute.
